During the August long weekend, I volunteered a couple of days of my time to help set up and carry out the BIG Print Project, run by New Leaf Editions on Granville Island. The project consisted of pulling immense 4 X 8 foot woodblock prints on either hemp canvas or 250 g. Stonehenge paper with the help of a steamroller. In exchange for my time, Peter Braune was kind enough to let me have a roll of paper of my own in order to pound and roll out a relief woodblock monoprint using a panel of plywood that I cut for the occasion. Both the print and the matrix used were then touched up with some aerosol before being installed in a mirror-like set-up. I’ve been reading quite a bit of Marshall McLuhan recently, so I’m hoping to produce more pieces in this vein, contrasting both iconographical and processed based allusions to ‘the medium is the message’.

Lors de la longue fin-de-semaine d’août, j’ai eu l’occasion de faire du bénévolat pour le BIG Print Project, un projet d’impression au rouleau compresseur organisé par New Leaf Editions de l’isle de Granville . En échange pour mon temps, Peter Braune a eu la gentillesse de m’offrir un rouleau de papier afin que je puisse tirer une impression à mon tour. J’ai donc martelé et fait roulé un mono-relief d’un panneau de contreplaqué que j’ai sculpté pour l’occasion. Pour l’installation finale de l’oeuvre, j’ai aussi retouché à l’aérosol la matrice et l’impression afin de créer un effet miroir. Je lis beaucoup les textes de Marshall McLuhan dernièrement, donc j’espère produire d’autres pièces de ce genre, qui contrastent techniquement et iconographiquement ses idées:

« […] en réalité et en pratique, le vrai message, c’est le médium lui-même, c’est-à-dire, tout simplement, que les effets d’un médium sur l’individu ou sur la société dépendent du changement d’échelle que produit chaque nouvelle technologie, chaque prolongement de nous-mêmes, dans notre vie¹. »
