THE ANATOMY LESSON is both a famous group portrait by Rembrandt van Rijn (1632), and the inspiration for the exhibit that was presented at the Brûlerie St-Roch, in Quebec City, from the 7th of November to the 7th of January 2011. Nine individual portraits (whose poses were borrowed from the aforementioned masterpiece) occupied the walls of this most popular coffee shop, and each of the pieces was treated in a different way.

Having been conceived for this specific site, the installation of plywood panels was seeking the golden mean between painting, sculpture and drawing; between the use of color and its absence; and between a unique artistic experience and the everyday encounter.

I want to thank again both the employees and the administration for having accepted to pose as models for this project.

LA LEÇON D’ANATOMIE est à la fois un tableau célèbre de Rembrandt (1632), artiste hollandais bien connu, et un point de départ pour l’exposition présentée à la Brûlerie St-Roch du 7 novembre 2010 au 7 janvier 2011. Neuf portraits individuels, reprenant les poses du tableau de maître, sont venus peupler les murs de votre café préféré et, dans chaque cas, les personnages ont été abordés d’une façon différente.

Conçus spécifiquement pour cet endroit particulier, les panneaux de contreplaqué installés cherchaient le juste milieu entre la sculpture, la peinture et le dessin; entre l’utilisation de la couleur et son absence; et entre l’expérience artistique inédite et le petit quotidien.

Je tiens à remercier encore une fois les employés et l’administration de la Brûlerie St-Roch d’avoir accueilli ce projet et pour y avoir participé en tant que modèles.
