NUIT DE LA CRÉATION @ MNBAQ: DANS L’ATELIER (2011)

IN THE STUDIO (Dans l’atelier) is a two sided panel installation which dialogues with the various museum pieces exposed in the ‘Ancient Art’ room of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.

On the back, it reproduces an autoportrait by Théophile Hamel, ‘Dans l’atelier’, at a time in history where litteral reproductions of Art are not considered to be valid art works. Religious low reliefs with gold leaf appliqués were also found in this section of the room.

The front consists of an autoportrait which includes an installation of all of the tools and artist materials used to construct the piece. The installation is meant to bring the studio into the museum setting rather than try to represent it as did Théophile Hamel in his autoportrait.

This piece comments on the actual education of contemporary painters in an academic setting versus the Mentors tradition of old, as well as the evolution of artistic practices up to this day.

Présenté lors de la Nuit de la création 2011 au Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, DANS L’ATELIER propose une relecture du tableau << L’autoportrait dans l’atelier >> de Théophile Hamel à une époque où la copie d’une peinture n’a sensiblement aucune valeur artistique.

Conçu sous la thématique de l’Engagement, le panneau recto-verso en contreplaqué et son espace d’atelier sont installés dans la salle << Québec, l’art d’une capitale coloniale >>. L’installation cherche donc à dialoguer avec les oeuvres avoisinantes afin d’examiner de plus près la formation des peintres de la relève à l’intérieur d’une institution universitaire de même que l’évolution des enjeux de la peinture depuis l’époque académique.
